In 1924,Nordic ski events were held at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix,France. But the American skiers came home without medals.Norway took most of the medals for cross-country and ski jumping events that year. They did the same for many years after. From 1924 through 1972,the American skiers had no medals to show for their Olympic trips. The U.S.was generally thought to be weak in ski competition
But in 1974 it was discovered that the U.S.record was slightly better than people had been led to believe. And Norway's record was not quite as good. The discovery was a surprise and a delight to American ski fans, but even more so to American skier Anders Haugen. After fifty years,Anders got the medal he should have won back in 1924.
In the ski jump event at Chamonix in 1924,Haugen had scored in fourth place. He had just missed earning a medal. His score was 17.916,just slightly behind Thorleif Haug of Norway.Haug's score of 18 had won him the bronze medal.
But in 1974,Norway's National Olympic Committee did a check of all final Olympic results. There had been an error in?computing?Haug's score! So Haugen, now,an elderly man, traveled across the ocean for his award. On September 12,1974,hewas given a bronze medal in a special ceremony at the Norway Ski Museum.

5、Some young soldiers who had recently joined the army were being trained in modern ways of fighting, and one of the things they were shown was how an unarmed man could trick an armed enemy and take his weapon away from him.First one of their two instructors took a knife away from the other, using only his bare hands;and then he took a rifle away from him in the same way. After the lesson, and before they went on to train the young soldiers to do these things themselves, the two instructors asked them a number of questions to see how well they had understood what they had been shown. One of the questions was this:“Well, you now know what an unarmed man can do against a man with a rifle.Imagine that you are guarding a bridge at night, and that you have a rifle.Suddenly you see an unarmed enemy soldier coming towards you. What will you do?”
The young soldier who had to answer this question thought carefully for a few seconds before he answered, and then said,“Well, after what I have just seen,I think that the first thing I would do would be to get rid of my rifle as quickly as I could,so that the unarmed enemy couldn't take it from me and kill me with it!”

B、after being instructed
C、while being instructed

6、You have been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give you a blood transfusion because you lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for you.If the blood is too different from your own,the transfusion could kill you.
There are four basic types of blood;A,B,AB and O.A simple test can indicate a person's blood type.Everybody is born with one of these four types of blood.Blood type, like hair color and height,is inherited from parents.
Because of substances contained in each type, the four groups must be trans fused carefully.Basically,A and B cannot be mixed.A and B cannot receive AB,but AB may receive A or
B.O can give to any other group, hence it is often called the universal donor. For the opposite reason,AB sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because so many reactions can occur in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt or plasma until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank of a hospital. In this way,it is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion.
There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality.Among Europeans and people of European ancestry, about 42 percent have type A while 45 percent have type O.The rarest is type A
B.Other races have different percentages. For example, some American Indian groups have nearly 100 percent type O.
The word“hence”in line 10 means__.
A、always
B、often
C、therefore
D、seldom

7、Scotland provides superb opportunities to enjoy wild and grand scenery which is even more impressive than the postcards suggest. It also offers towns and cities with a rich cultural life,a good mix of accommodation and places to eat and drink.Friendly and welcoming,it is an interesting and colorful all-season destination, where landscapes and the environment, sport and leisure pursuits, heritage and history, culture and cuisine are all part of a rewarding experience.
The best reason for choosing to go on holiday to Scotland is:one of the last places inside the crowded and frenetic European Union where it is possible to be alone isolated countryside. This is not to say that Scotland, like everywhere else, does not have its tourist traps, its crowded roads or its popular beauty spots. But it is relatively easy to escape from them.
It would be a mistake to think that Scotland is merely an extension of England.
Indeed,no attitude is capable of causing greater offence to the Scots. They successfully resisted English attempts at domination for seven hundred years, and many differences between the two countries persist.
Scotland's history,embodied in its castles,battlefields,and ancient links with France,Flanders and Scandinavia,is special.
Scotland is__.
A、full of lively towns and cities
B、similar to many other countries in Europe
C、as impressive as postcards suggest
D、good for sports

9、Years ago,a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work,we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction,we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach.
The truth is simple;so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet,we pursue the myth that this thing,or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek.
Arthur Lindman,in his very effective book,"The Harried Leisure Class,"described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But,ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme,he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago,and his prediction seems more accurate every year.
Lindman of course,is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better,he wrote,to have less, but enjoy it more.
If you would like to enjoy life more,I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on?
The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up,the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself.
Arthur Lindman wrote__.
A、a popular novel
B、a research paper
C、Ecclesiastes
D、The Harried Leisure Class

10、First,the spotted owl was threatened by logging in the Pacific Northwest. Now it's in danger from a new enemy, the barred owl.Barred owls have been moving to the Northwest from the eastern part of the United States.Stan Sovern has studied spotted owls. Now when he calls for spotted owls, barred owls are starting to appear.Sovern threw a mouse on the ground, and a barred owl grabbed it.
Scientists have learned that spotted owls start to vanish when barred owls come. Some barred and spotted owls have mated and produced hybrid babies. One spotted owl was killed by a barred owl.
Professor Ned K.Brown of the University of California-Berkeley says,"In some areas of Washington, the barred owls moved into very dense, deep woods. The same kind of woods that arc opened up,or destroyed by logging, that adversely influences the spotted owls."
Ten years have passed since the federal government began protecting the spotted owl.Loggers were forced to limit logging on seven million acres of government land.No one is sure how the arrival of the barred owls will impact laws that protect spotted laws. The barred owls like to live in the deep forests where loggers like to cut down trees. The barred owls will likely keep migrating to the Northwest.
Scientists learned about the barred owl migration by__.
A、decoding spotted owl sounds
B、feeding mice to the owls
C、monitoring spotted owl populations
D、researching the Internet

11、We first think of the traditional or nuclear family. This is a two-generation family, the father and the mother and their own children. Most couples wanted to have four children, two boys, two girls.
Some nuclear families, however, may add one or more grandparents to come to live with them, that is three generations. This kind of family with grandparents, parents, and grandchildren is called an extended family. This family type was not very common during the later half of the twentieth century, but it's becoming more common now as an elderly grandparent moves in to live with a son or daughter. This is more possible now that American homes have become larger. What is interesting, however,is that after the grandchildren move out of the home and start their own families, this extended family shrinks back to a nuclear family, with just two generations again living together,a grandparent and parents, with the grandchildren coming only for occasional visits.
Now,the fatherless or motherless family is one kind of what we call a single-parent family. In the fatherless family it's just the mother and her children. As I said, this can be the result of the husband's death,of an unmarried mother,of a separation or divorce. There are also a growing number of motherless families--where the father raises the children, for any of the same reasons.A motherless family may also be fatherless, but still a family with one adult. This is becoming more common in the big cities where a grandmother will raise her daughter's children while the daughter goes elsewhere to work.
One other new kind of family is becoming increasingly more common.A single parent with one or more children will marry again.Perhaps the other parent is also a single parent.Together they will start what is called a blended family, which blends together or combines the children from two other families.
How is a blended family formed?
A、A blended family is formed by two single-parent familie
B、A blended family is formed by a nuclear family and a grandparen
C、A blended family is formed by a nuclear family and grandparent
D、A blended family is formed by two fatherless familie

12、Of all Barry
H.Landau's anecdotes about his friendships with presidential dogs, perhaps the best is the one about the time the Clinton White House called to postpone his play-date with Buddy.
Yes,Landau is both human and an adult,a 60-year-old author, presidential historian, former White House protocol officer and memorabilia collector. But so enamored is he of dogs, and so well connected to a succession of presidents, that he had an appointment for a South Lawn romp one day with Buddy,Bill Clinton's Labrador retriever(拉布拉多犬).
Logistics got in the way, though, and hence Clinton secretary Betty Currie's apologetic voice mail left at the Smithsonian Institution, where Landau was doing research:"I'm sorry, but we'll have to reschedule Mr.Landau's play-date with Buddy."
Not surprisingly, this is a happy week for Landau, with the new Obama family dog,Bo,joining a White House tradition that dates to George Washington. It's one that Landau feels is invaluable to a presidency.
"Having a dog just humanizes a president,"he says."It completes the picture. It's something people can relate to."
And Landau has related to the best of them. He's known about 25 White House dogs since the Eisenhower administration.Among the presidential-pooch memorabilia in his Manhattan apartment are matching orange inaugural dog coats worn by LBJ's twin beagles(小猎犬),Him and Her,and a photo of Landau kissing Clipper,JFK's German shepherd.
According to Landau, why is it important for a president to have a dog?
A、It increases his chances of being reelecte
B、It humanizes the president, making him easier to relate t
C、It shows that the president can care for an anima
D、It is the tradition of White House as a presiden

13、Many people use wood stoves and fireplaces to heat their homes.Scientists have become worried about the smoke that they give off.Harmful chemicals are in the smoke. The smoke is causing air pollution. The pieces of pollution, called soot, are floating in the air. They are too tiny to see.Scientists must use a microscope to see them.
Small amounts of soot are safe, but large amounts can be dangerous. The govenment wants to limit this kind of pollution. It may stop people from using their fireplaces.
The air is tested every day. When soot levels are high, more than 65 micrograms of soot per cubic meter, factories must stop making smoke. The government thinks that limit should be much lower.
Factories produce the most smoke and soot. But the government thinks that all types of burning should be limited. The soot levels from factories and homes could be limited.Home owners may have to install new wood stoves that they comply with the new law.Or,they may not be able to bum on days when the air quality is bad.
Residents of some towns are fined if they violate the burning ban.Scientists hope these new regulations will make the air cleaner and less harmful to breathe.
What could home owners do to comply with the new regulation?
A、Write a lette
B、Ask for permissio
C、Use more electricit
D、Install new low-soot fireplace

15、If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research result of professor Faulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result,we are ageing unnecessarily soon.
Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and to reason at a relatively early age,and how the process of ageing could be slowed down.
He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations.
Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the human character.
Contraction of front and side parts--as cells die off--was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds.
Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contraction—using the head.
The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Faulkner, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors.White--collar workers doing routine work are, however,as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.
Faulkner's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking.Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need."The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,"he says."Think hard and engage in conversation.Don't rely on pocket calculators."
Professor Faulkner wanted to find out__.
A、how people's brains shrink
B、the way of making people live longer
C、the size of certain people's brains
D、why certain people aged sooner than others
