2、Passage Five
In 1924,Nordic ski events were held at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix,France. But the American skiers came home without medals.Norway took most of the medals for cross-country and ski jumping events that year. They did the same for many years after. From 1924 through 1972,the American skiers had no medals to show for their Olympic trips. The U.S.was generally thought to be weak in ski competition
But in 1974 it was discovered that the U.S.record was slightly better than people had been led to believe. And Norway's record was not quite as good. The discovery was a surprise and a delight to American ski fans, but even more so to American skier Anders Haugen. After fifty years,Anders got the medal he should have won back in 1924.
In the ski jump event at Chamonix in 1924,Haugen had scored in fourth place. He had just missed earning a medal. His score was 17.916,just slightly behind Thorleif Haug of Norway.Haug's score of 18 had won him the bronze medal.
But in 1974,Norway's National Olympic Committee did a check of all final Olympic results. There had been an error in?computing?Haug's score! So Haugen, now,an elderly man, traveled across the ocean for his award. On September 12,1974,hewas given a bronze medal in a special ceremony at the Norway Ski Museum.
From 1924-1972,U.S.skiers were considered weak in Olympic competition because they______
A、had won only two medals
B、had won no medals
C、had never entered jumping events
D、had won only one medal

3、In the US,people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don't know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is.If you are sitting at a table with people you don't know,it is impolite to light up a cigarette without first asking if it will disturb them.
At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.
Most cities and towns have no roles about opening and closing times for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars.Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.
Servings in restaurants are often large, too large for many people. If you can't finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a"doggie bag".It may have a picture of a dog on it,but everybody knows you are taking food for yourself.
Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have"Sunday dinner".This is an especially big noon meal.
Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either.A tip of about 15%is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants,a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.
What do American people always do when servings are too large for them?
A、They take the food home with a doggie bag for their dog
B、They leave the food on the table and go awa
C、They take the food home with a doggie bag and enjoy the food late
D、They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for the

4、Social customs and ways of behaving change.Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable.Just a few years ago,it was considered impolite behaviour for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.
Customs are also different from country to country.Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country?Or doesn't it matter? What about table manner?Should you use both hands when you are eating?
The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example,in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans.Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is,if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay.
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable--especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way.It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.
According to the text, the best host
A、tries his best to make his guests feel comfortable
B、makes his guests feel excited
C、tries to avoid being naughty to his guests
D、tries to avoid being foolish

5、When I was about 12 1 had an enemy,a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings.Week by week her list grew:I was skinny,I wasn't a good student,I was boyish,I talked too loud, and so on.I put up with her as long as I could. At last, with great anger,I ran to my father in tears.
He listened to my outburst quietly. Then he asked,"Are the things she says true or not?"
True?I wanted to know how to strike back. What did truth have to do with it?
"Mary, didn't you ever wonder what you are really like?Well, you now have that girl's opinion.Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true.Pay no attention to the other things she said."
I did as he directed and discovered to my surprise that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change(like being skinny),but a good number I could and suddenly wanted to change.
For the first time in my life I got a fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.
"That's just for you,"he said."You know better than anybody else the truth about yourself, once you hear it.But you've got to learn to listen, not to close your ears in anger or hurt. When something said about you is true you'll know it.You'll find that it will echo inside you."
Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments.

A、The girl benefited from her father's advic
B、The girl was very often angry with her fathe
C、The girl's father loved other people's advic
D、The girl was easily hurt by her father

7、Years ago,a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work,we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction,we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach.
The truth is simple;so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet,we pursue the myth that this thing,or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek.
Arthur Lindman,in his very effective book,"The Harried Leisure Class,"described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But,ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme,he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago,and his prediction seems more accurate every year.
Lindman of course,is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better,he wrote,to have less, but enjoy it more.
If you would like to enjoy life more,I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on?
The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up,the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself.
Arthur Lindman wrote__.
A、a popular novel
B、a research paper
C、Ecclesiastes
D、The Harried Leisure Class

8、Many people use wood stoves and fireplaces to heat their homes.Scientists have become worried about the smoke that they give off.Harmful chemicals are in the smoke. The smoke is causing air pollution. The pieces of pollution, called soot, are floating in the air. They are too tiny to see.Scientists must use a microscope to see them.
Small amounts of soot are safe, but large amounts can be dangerous. The govenment wants to limit this kind of pollution. It may stop people from using their fireplaces.
The air is tested every day. When soot levels are high, more than 65 micrograms of soot per cubic meter, factories must stop making smoke. The government thinks that limit should be much lower.
Factories produce the most smoke and soot. But the government thinks that all types of burning should be limited. The soot levels from factories and homes could be limited.Home owners may have to install new wood stoves that they comply with the new law.Or,they may not be able to bum on days when the air quality is bad.
Residents of some towns are fined if they violate the burning ban.Scientists hope these new regulations will make the air cleaner and less harmful to breathe.
What happens to some residents who bum too much wood?
A、They could lose their home
B、They pay for the punishmen
C、They get sick from the smok
D、The fire could get out of contro

9、At the first sight the planet Mars does not appear very welcome to any kind of life.It has very little oxygen and water, the temperature at night is below-50~Cand winds of 100 miles per hour cause severe dust storms. However, the surface of the planet seems to show that water flowed across it some time in the past, and it is believed that there is enough ice at the poles to cover the planet with water if it melts.Although there is no life on the Mars now, some scientists think that there may have been some form of life long time ago.At that time, the planet had active volcanoes;the atmosphere was thicker and warmer;and there was water. In fact,in some ways the Mars may have been similar to the Earth, where life exists.
Some people believe that the Mars could support life in the future if the right conditions were produced. The first step would be to warm the planet using certain gases which trap the Sun's heat in the planet's atmosphere. With warmth, water and carbon dioxide(二氧化碳),simple plants could begin to grow. These plants could slowly make the Mars more suitable for living. It is estimated that the whole process might take between 100,000 and 200,000 years. In the meantime, people could begin to live on the planet in special closed environments. They would provide a lot of useful information about conditions on the Mars and the problems connected with living there.
The author's attitude towards the possibility of life on the Mars in the future is__.
A、doubtful
B、positive
C、negative
D、uninterested
