、Some young soldiers who had recently joined the army were being trained in modern ways of fighting, and one of the things they were shown was how an unarmed man could trick an armed enemy and take his weapon away from him.First one of their two instructors took a knife away from the other, using only his bare hands;and then he took a rifle away from him in the same way. After the lesson, and before they went on to train the young soldiers to do these things themselves, the two instructors asked them a number of questions to see how well they had understood what they had been shown. One of the questions was this:“Well, you now know what an unarmed man can do against a man with a rifle.Imagine that you are guarding a bridge at night, and that you have a rifle.Suddenly you see an unarmed enemy soldier coming towards you. What will you do?” The young soldier who had to answer this question thought carefully for a few seconds before he answered, and then said,“Well, after what I have just seen,I think that the first thing I would do would be to get rid of my rifle as quickly as I could,so that the unarmed enemy couldn't take it from me and kill me with it!” The soldiers practiced__.

、Pub hours shake-up revealed next week By James Hardy Political Editor PUBS and clubs will be allowed to stay open round-the-clock under a planned radical change of Britain's outdated licensing(许可证发放)laws. Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday revealed a Bill(议案)to bring in the long-awaited improvement will be contained in the Queen's Speech next week. Some public bars and clubs could be open all hours while others could choose different closing times into the early hours. Police forces around the country have said different closing times will mean the explosion in violence and vandalism(破坏行为)after 11p.m.-when aggressive drunks are sent out at the same time. The move will be opposed by some MPs(下院议员)who fear it will lead to increased alcoholism, drunken behavior and crime. But ministers say there will be controls on which pubs and clubs are allowed to open 24 hours a day. Places which consistently attract violent drunks and troublemakers will be turned down. Mr.Blair said:"We believe there should be greater flexibility in licensing. In the end,the evidence that we have is that it may help in the fight against anti-social behavior. At the moment the very fixed nature of the hours sometimes means that you get particular problems outside pubs and city centers at particular hours of the evening." The big change will be accompanied by a strict action on petty criminals who cause misery to urban and rural communities. In a bid to prevent criticism of the licensing improvement, the Govenment is to extend on-the-spot fines to a range of offences from vandalism. The PM said yesterday petty crime was the single biggest cause of daily aggressive behavior for millions. Some people say that when this law is passed,__

、The first true piece of sports equipment that man invented was the ball. In ancient Egypt,as everywhere, pitching stones was a favorite children's game. But a badly thrown rock could hurt a child.Looking for something less dangerous to throw, the Egyptians made what were probably the first balls. At first, balls were made of grass or leaves held together by vines.Later they were made of piece of animal skin sewed together and stuffed with feathers or hay. Even though the Egyptians were warlike, they found time for peaceful games. Before long they had developed a number of ball games, each with its own set of rules.Perhaps they played ball more for instruction than for fun.Ball playing was thought of mainly as a way to teach young men the speed and skill they would need for war. The best title for this selection is__.

、Every year gray whales migrate from the Bering Sea in Alaska to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Eleven gray whales have died in the San Francisco Bay in the last three weeks. No one knows why the whales are dying. Last year 270 whales died along the whales'migration route. Many people think starvation is the cause. This year the dead whales seem to have more blubber(fat)on them. Twenty years ago,the gray whale was listed as an endangered species. Some scientists think that the larger number of whales makes it hard to find enough food.More whales create more pressure on the food supply,a supply that some scientists say may have dwindled as a result of the warm waters of El Nino. Most of the whales have been dead for many days before they are found and studied. This makes it hard to find the reason for death. 65 whales have been seen in the San Francisco Bay Area this year compared to 17 last year. The whales could be dying from many diseases, but it may be over-population. Which of the following is NOT a possible reason for whales dying?

、The traffic lights were red when the driver reached them.To the surprise of his passenger, the ear did not slow down.Unexpectedly the passenger was thrown forward in the vehicle as the driver put on his brakes at the last moment. The car stopped just in time. "Sorry,I didn't notice the light.I thought it was green until I saw that it was the top light which was shining." This strange story is quite true.About ten men in every hundred are color blind in some way;women are luckier--only about one in two hundred suffers from color blindness. In some cases,a man may not be able to see deep red.He may think that red, orange and yellow are all the same as green. People often like one color more than others.Blue is the color of the sky and sea.Green makes us think of fields and trees.Red is the color of blood and makes some people think of danger.Black is the color of night. In the dark we cannot see what is around us so we are sometimes afraid of the unknown and do not like black as a color. One is considered as a color blind man if__.

、Like every language,American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way.Our expression today is“to face the music”. When someone says,“well,I guess I’ll have to face the music,”it does not mean he’s planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didn’t do this or that.Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced At sometime or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry voice,“I want to talk to you.”and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was! The phrase“to face the music”is familiar to every American, young and old,It is at least 100 years old .And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist,James Fenimore Looper. He said,in 1851,that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue to go on,they often said,“Well,it’s time to face the music.”And that was exactly what they did—facing the orchestra which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps?hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out.If he did not, there would be no play.So the expression“to face the music”come to mean“having to go through something,no matter how unpleasant the experience might be,because you knew you had no choice.” Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced an inspection by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked .Was their equipment clean, shinny enough to pass the inspection?Still the men had to go out and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do? Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As,for example when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible,he is dishonored .The band does not play.Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse. The underlined word“hostile”means_______.

、In 2011, a dog owner named Robert uploaded a video titled“Guilty!” to YouTube. He had come home finding his two dogs near an empty bag of cat treats. The first dog behaved calmly. But the second dog, Denver, sat shaking in a corner, her eyes looking down, which made Robert believe it was she who had done it. Seeing her “apparent admission of guilt,” he yelled at her, “You did this!” Denver beat her tail nervously. “You know the routine. In the kennel(狗窝)!” Following the command, the dog shut herself in.The video quickly gathered a flood of comments. Since then, “dog shaming” has become popularOn the internet, as owners around the world posted beside notes shots of their trembling pets in which the dogs seemed to admit bad behavior. For instance, “I ate an extra large pizza,” admits a chocolate Lab. Human enthusiasm for guilty dogs seemed growing. But according to a researcher at Barnard College, what we consider to be a dog’s guilty look is no sign of guilt at all. In a 2009 study, the researcher had owners forbid their dogs from eating an attractive treat, and then asked the owners to leave the room. While each owner was gone, the researcher either removed the treat or fed it to the dog. When the owners returned, they were told-regardless of the truth-that their dogs either had or had not eaten it. If owners thought their dogs had done something wrong, blames followed, and guilty looks quickly emerged. Yet dogs who hadn’t eaten the treat were more likely to appear guilty than dogs who had-so long as their owners scolded them. Far from signaling regret, one group of researchers wrote in a 2012 paper, the guilty look of dogs is very likely a means to show obedience(顺从)to their owners. What does “a chocolate Lab” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

、Vegans try to live, as much as possible, in a way that avoids exploiting and being cruel to animals.“his means following a plant-based diet. Vegans do not eat animals or animal-based products like meat, fish, seafood, eggs, honey and dairy products such as cheese. For many vegans, living a committed vegan lifestyle means not wearing clothes made from animal skins and avoiding any products which have been tested on animals.Vegans argue that suffering is caused in the production of these foods. For example, they say that, on some dairy farms, male calves(小牛)are killed because they are too expensive to keep, and cows are killed when they get older and produce less milk. As for honey, vegans say that bees make honey for bee, not for humans, and that bees’health can suffer when humans take the honey from them. Vegans be lieve that the products they use and consume should be free from not just cruelty but any exploitation of animals. The main reason for going vegan is probably that they believe animals and all other sentient(有感知能力的)beings should have the right to life and freedom. However, there are other reasons. Vegans argue that the production of meat and other animal products is very bad for the environment. They point out that a huge quantity of water is needed to grow grain to feed animals in the meat industry. The enormous amount of grain which the meat industry needs often leads to forests being cut down and habitats(栖息地)being lost. In contrast, much lower quantities of grain and water are needed to sustain a vegan diet. In addition, many vegans say that all the nutritious elements our bodies need are contained in a carefully planned vegan diet and that this type of diet helps prevent some diseases. What belief do vegans hold?
