2、Passage Two
The thought of not sleeping for twenty-four hours or more is not a pleasant one for most people. The amount of sleep that each person needs varies. In general, each of us needs about eight hours of sleep each day to keep our bodies healthy and happy. Some people, however, can get by just a few hours of sleep at night.
It doesn't matter when or how much a person sleeps. But everyone needs some rest to stay alive.Few doctors would have thought that there might be an exception on this.Sleep is,after all,a very basic need. But a man named AI Herpin turned out to be a real exception, for supposedly,he never slept!
A1 Herpin was 90 years old when doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They hoped to negate the claims that he never slept. But they were surprised.Though they watched him every hour of the day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. He did not even own a bed.He never needed one.
The closest that Herpin came to resting was to sit in a rocking chair and read a half dozen news-papers.His doctors were baffled by this strange case of permanent insomnia.Herpin offered the only clue to his condition. He remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days be-fore he had been born.Herpin died at the age of 94,never having slept a wink.

6、Passage Four
How can we get rid of garbage?Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs?
These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time,They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the same time it can save the land to hold garbage.
For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped it on empty land. Now,empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use.The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum,or natural gas;but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels. As we use up our fossil-fuel supplies,we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby, buildings. In Paris,France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil.
Our fossil fuel supplies are limited.Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount if garbage piling up on the earth.

8、Pub hours shake-up revealed next week
By James Hardy Political Editor
PUBS and clubs will be allowed to stay open round-the-clock under a planned radical change of Britain's outdated licensing(许可证发放)laws.
Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday revealed a Bill(议案)to bring in the long-awaited improvement will be contained in the Queen's Speech next week. Some public bars and clubs could be open all hours while others could choose different closing times into the early hours.
Police forces around the country have said different closing times will mean the explosion in violence and vandalism(破坏行为)after 11p.m.-when aggressive drunks are sent out at the same time.
The move will be opposed by some MPs(下院议员)who fear it will lead to increased alcoholism, drunken behavior and crime. But ministers say there will be controls on which pubs and clubs are allowed to open 24 hours a day.
Places which consistently attract violent drunks and troublemakers will be turned down.
Mr.Blair said:"We believe there should be greater flexibility in licensing. In the end,the evidence that we have is that it may help in the fight against anti-social behavior. At the moment the very fixed nature of the hours sometimes means that you get particular problems outside pubs and city centers at particular hours of the evening."
The big change will be accompanied by a strict action on petty criminals who cause misery to urban and rural communities.
In a bid to prevent criticism of the licensing improvement, the Govenment is to extend on-the-spot fines to a range of offences from vandalism.
The PM said yesterday petty crime was the single biggest cause of daily aggressive behavior for millions.
The"Bill"in the second paragraph refers to__.
A、some new pubs and clubs will be open
B、some pubs and clubs will be closed
C、pubs and clubs can be open at different times
D、pubs and clubs can be open day and night
(  D  )
9、In the US,people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don't know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is.If you are sitting at a table with people you don't know,it is impolite to light up a cigarette without first asking if it will disturb them.
At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.
Most cities and towns have no roles about opening and closing times for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars.Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.
Servings in restaurants are often large, too large for many people. If you can't finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a"doggie bag".It may have a picture of a dog on it,but everybody knows you are taking food for yourself.
Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have"Sunday dinner".This is an especially big noon meal.
Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either.A tip of about 15%is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants,a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.
Which statement is true?
A、American people like sitting with people they don't kno
B、A hostess always seats a small group at a large tabl
C、American people never sit with people they don't kno
D、American people would not light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smokin

10、Scotland provides superb opportunities to enjoy wild and grand scenery which is even more impressive than the postcards suggest. It also offers towns and cities with a rich cultural life,a good mix of accommodation and places to eat and drink.Friendly and welcoming,it is an interesting and colorful all-season destination, where landscapes and the environment, sport and leisure pursuits, heritage and history, culture and cuisine are all part of a rewarding experience.
The best reason for choosing to go on holiday to Scotland is:one of the last places inside the crowded and frenetic European Union where it is possible to be alone isolated countryside. This is not to say that Scotland, like everywhere else, does not have its tourist traps, its crowded roads or its popular beauty spots. But it is relatively easy to escape from them.
It would be a mistake to think that Scotland is merely an extension of England.
Indeed,no attitude is capable of causing greater offence to the Scots. They successfully resisted English attempts at domination for seven hundred years, and many differences between the two countries persist.
Scotland's history,embodied in its castles,battlefields,and ancient links with France,Flanders and Scandinavia,is special.
When you say that Scotland is like England, the Scottish__.
A、feel insulted
B、are offended
C、are amused
D、feel shocked
(  D  )
11、Can animals be made to work for us?Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings.
They point out that at a circus, for example,we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things.Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film.If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them.
Of course,as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modem times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russia, for example, pigeons which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others,it touches a steel plate with its beak. This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to do this and one pigeon can inspect 3 000 to 4 000 balls an hour.
Apes have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys may be one day gather crops and even drive trains.

12、The traffic lights were red when the driver reached them.To the surprise of his passenger, the ear did not slow down.Unexpectedly the passenger was thrown forward in the vehicle as the driver put on his brakes at the last moment. The car stopped just in time.
"Sorry,I didn't notice the light.I thought it was green until I saw that it was the top light which was shining."
This strange story is quite true.About ten men in every hundred are color blind in some way;women are luckier--only about one in two hundred suffers from color blindness.
In some cases,a man may not be able to see deep red.He may think that red, orange and yellow are all the same as green.
People often like one color more than others.Blue is the color of the sky and sea.Green makes us think of fields and trees.Red is the color of blood and makes some people think of danger.Black is the color of night. In the dark we cannot see what is around us so we are sometimes afraid of the unknown and do not like black as a color.
According to the passage,we can guess it is safer to take a car driven by a woman because__.
A、she drives the car more carefully
B、she sees the road more clearly
C、she can put on the brakes more quickly
D、she has less chance of being color blind

13、There Pictures from outer space now show us how much land has changed on earth. These images are taken by Landsat 7,a government satellite. The satellites have been used for 27 years. They reveal the clear-cutting of forests in the northwestern part of the United States.Pictures show the loss of rain forests in South America.
NASA's Darrel Williams speaks about the Landsat 7 Project. He said that an eruption caused trees to burn up in a large forest.Fifteen years later, pinkish images from space show that the trees and plant life are growing again.Williams says that clear-cut areas easily show up in the pictures. He wants Americans to look at how much land is being cleared of forests in our country.
Satellites have provided other information about changes on earth. In the past ten years, more than four miles have shrunk from glaciers in Alaska.Landsat 7 received these computer images of Glacier Bay in Alaska.
Hurricanes Floyd and Irene have damaged the coastline in North Carolina.Runoff from farms and silt have gone into the.ocean according to satellite images.Loss of trees and forests have caused hotter summers in southern cities such as Atlanta,Georgia.
The Landsat 7 images are like pictures in a photo album.Instead of pictures of the family, the album shows changes around the globe in the past 25 years.
A new satellite,Terra,is going to be launched by NASA soon.It will be more advanced than Landsat 7 and will take important global pictures.Ocean temperatures and energy loss will be provided by Terra daily.
Silt and heavy run-off from farms in North Carolina were caused by__.
A、Hurricanes Irene and Floyd
B、Hurricanes Floyd and Carla
C、an eruption from a volcano
D、deforestation of trees

14、There are many stereotypes about the character of people in various parts of the United States. In the Northeast and Midwest, people are said to be closed and private. In the South and West, however, they are often thought of as being more open and hospitable.Ask someone from St.Louis where the nearest sandwich shop is,and he or she will politely give you directions.A New Yorker might eye you at first and after deciding it is safe to talk to you, might give you a rather unexpected explanation.A person from Georgia might be very kind about directing you and even suggest some different places to eat.A Texan just might take you to the place and treat you to lunch.
American stereotypes are abundant.New Englanders are often thought of as being friendly and helpful.Southerners are known for their hospitality and warmth.People from the western part of the United States are often considered very outgoing. These differences in character can be traced to different factors such as climate, living conditions, and historical development.
When travelling from place to place,Americans themselves are often surprised at the differing degrees of friendliness in the United States.
New Englanders are often thought of as being__.
A、hospital and warm
B、out going
C、friendly and helpful
D、all of the above

15、The world's oceans have warmed 50 percent faster over the last 40 years than previously thought due to climate change,Australian and US climate researchers reported Wednesday.Higher ocean temperatures expand the volume of water, contributing to a rise in sea levels that is covering small island nations and threatening to destroy the low-lying,densely-populated low regions around the globe.
The study, published in the British journal Nature, adds to a growing scientific chorus of warnings about the pace and consequences rising oceans. It also serves as a corrective to a massive report issued last year by the Nobel-winning UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPC
C),according to the authors.
Rising sea levels are driven by two things:the thermal expansion of sea water, and additional water from melting sources of ice. Both processes are caused by global warming. The ice sheet that sits atop Greenland, for example, contains enough water to raise world ocean levels by seven meters, which would bury sea-level cities from Dhaka to Shanghai.
Trying to figure out how much each of these factors contributes to rising sea levels is critically important to understanding climate change, and forecasting future temperature rises, scientists say.But up to now, there has been a puzzling gap between the projections of computer-based climate models, and the observations of scientists gathering data from the oceans.
The new study, led by Catia Domingues of the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research,is the first to reunite the models with observed data.Using new techniques to assess ocean temperatures to a depth of 700 meters from 1961 to 2003,it shows that thermal warming contributed to a 0.53 millimeter-per-year rise in sea levels rather than the 0.32 mm rise reported by the IPC
C.
What happens when the ocean's temperature rises?
A、It causes sea levels to ris
B、It causes sea levels to decreas
C、It causes sea levels to remain unchange
D、It causes sea flood all over the glob

16、Online distance learning is an instructional system which connects learners with educational resources.Students work on their own at home,at work,or at school and communicate with faculty and other students by means of e-mail,electronic meetings, videoconferencing, chat rooms, instant messaging and other forms of computer-based communication. There are both advantages and disadvantages to online distance learning.
There are many benefits to using online distance learning environments.Online education is available all the time, anywhere and to all people. However, there are weaknesses for some learners. The online learner only has the written text and no other face-to-face hints. This may confuse the learner and cause misunderstanding. While distance learning allows for an openness,it is also difficult because it is done by e-mail messages and writing, and therefore may take more time than face-to-face learning.Sometimes the messages can be overwhelming for many online students.
Universities, colleges and schools use online distance learning environments. These are important for students who may be unable to attend classes for various reasons like illnesses or busy everyday schedules. Some learners just want to further their studies at home. They enjoy the convenience of home learning as they take regular programs or enrichment classes.
Online courses keep learners very occupied at all hours of the day. There are a great many messages and other online resources to read and respond to.Most learners have regular jobs or attend regular school classes on ground as well. However, the benefits are clear.Online distance learning is becoming very popular. Some online classes have become a profitable business as they replace regular traditional means of learning.
One of the good aspects of online distance learning is__.
A、speed
B、convenience
C、easy operation
D、variety of instruction

Days before this emergency, the mother had taught her child how to telephone for help.Children as young as two and one-half years old can be taught to use the phone in emergency situations. Here are some points.
Memorizing certain facts is important.Teach your children their names, and the section of town where you live.Try to keep what they learn within their abilities.Simple information, learned well,is better than difficult information only partly learned.
Be sure your children know how to use the telephone. They should be taught to dial"zero"for the operator,at the very least. And they should be taught to dial"911"if it is used in your town.
Practice over a period of several days.Over-learning is necessary so the child can act automatically in case of emergency.
If you would like a booklet giving instructions on calling for help, write Telephone For Help,Box 99,Bowling Green Station,New York,NY 10004.

21、Music is part of the structure of our society; it sits at the heart of human experience and enriches(丰富)so many lives. Why, then, is it not central to our education system? This is a question I recently put forward to an all-party group on music education.I am 20 years old and began playing the piano at the Barracudas Band in Barrow-in-Furness,aged seven. The funding for the centre has now been cut. I took part in the primary tuition project, aged 11. The funding for that has also been cut now. It is a common problem across the country.Music is not an add-on, a “soft” subject or a luxury—it is absolutely essential to our existence.Every child deserves the opportunity to experience its benefits. Until music is held in the same regard as the “core” subjects of our curriculum, our society will be worse off. We need joy, empathy (共情) and hope on this planet more than ever, and taking away children’s opportunity to develop musical skills is to set ourselves up for a fall. Despite the many brilliant programs and projects to encourage young musicians (“Every Child a Musician,” “Awards for Young Musicians,” to name but a few), we are reaching a crisis point. We are in danger of destroying creativity, innovation(创新)and expression. Learning an instrument can help develop so many fundamental life skills. It promotes discipline, empathy, determination and cooperation as well as providing a sense of community and worth.Music has changed my life. It is a huge part of who I am. I have learned so much about the worldThrough music and the inspiring figures I have met through it I feel I have a duty to help ensure that others can benefit from its magic. Let us make it available to every single child. What is the theme of the passage?
A、Music education should be available to every child.
B、Music training programs should be provided free.
C、Music should be placed at the top of the curriculum.
D、Music should be made popular across the country.
