、Passage Three Americans are well known for the strange diets they always seem to be following. It seems that Americans like to diet almost as much as they like to eat.New types of diet plans are always coming out.Usually, though, they don't stay popular for long. There are many diets on the market. It is often difficult to know which ones really work. It's also hard to believe how fast a dieter is supposed to shed pounds.A lot has been written about dieting. And some interesting facts about diets and foods have been discovered. For example, did you know that the more celery you eat,the more weight you will lose?Celery has“negative”calories. The body burns up more calories digesting a piece of celery than there are in the celery stick itself. Dieters?shun?potatoes because they think they are fattening. But they aren't.A potato has about the same number of calories as an apple. To gain a single pound, you would have to eat eleven pounds of potatoes! Some dieters even worry about getting fat from licking postage stamps. But they have nothing to worry about. The glue on an average stamp has only about one-tenth of a calorie.Maybe a diet of post-age stamps would be popular? One could conclude from this passage that______

、Passage Five In 1924,Nordic ski events were held at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix,France. But the American skiers came home without medals.Norway took most of the medals for cross-country and ski jumping events that year. They did the same for many years after. From 1924 through 1972,the American skiers had no medals to show for their Olympic trips. The U.S.was generally thought to be weak in ski competition But in 1974 it was discovered that the U.S.record was slightly better than people had been led to believe. And Norway's record was not quite as good. The discovery was a surprise and a delight to American ski fans, but even more so to American skier Anders Haugen. After fifty years,Anders got the medal he should have won back in 1924. In the ski jump event at Chamonix in 1924,Haugen had scored in fourth place. He had just missed earning a medal. His score was 17.916,just slightly behind Thorleif Haug of Norway.Haug's score of 18 had won him the bronze medal. But in 1974,Norway's National Olympic Committee did a check of all final Olympic results. There had been an error in?computing?Haug's score! So Haugen, now,an elderly man, traveled across the ocean for his award. On September 12,1974,hewas given a bronze medal in a special ceremony at the Norway Ski Museum. The best definition for the word computing is______

、Pub hours shake-up revealed next week By James Hardy Political Editor PUBS and clubs will be allowed to stay open round-the-clock under a planned radical change of Britain's outdated licensing(许可证发放)laws. Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday revealed a Bill(议案)to bring in the long-awaited improvement will be contained in the Queen's Speech next week. Some public bars and clubs could be open all hours while others could choose different closing times into the early hours. Police forces around the country have said different closing times will mean the explosion in violence and vandalism(破坏行为)after 11p.m.-when aggressive drunks are sent out at the same time. The move will be opposed by some MPs(下院议员)who fear it will lead to increased alcoholism, drunken behavior and crime. But ministers say there will be controls on which pubs and clubs are allowed to open 24 hours a day. Places which consistently attract violent drunks and troublemakers will be turned down. Mr.Blair said:"We believe there should be greater flexibility in licensing. In the end,the evidence that we have is that it may help in the fight against anti-social behavior. At the moment the very fixed nature of the hours sometimes means that you get particular problems outside pubs and city centers at particular hours of the evening." The big change will be accompanied by a strict action on petty criminals who cause misery to urban and rural communities. In a bid to prevent criticism of the licensing improvement, the Govenment is to extend on-the-spot fines to a range of offences from vandalism. The PM said yesterday petty crime was the single biggest cause of daily aggressive behavior for millions. When the new law is passed,__.

、Social customs and ways of behaving change.Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable.Just a few years ago,it was considered impolite behaviour for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room. Customs are also different from country to country.Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country?Or doesn't it matter? What about table manner?Should you use both hands when you are eating? The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example,in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans.Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is,if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable--especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way.It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable. According to the text, the best host

、When I was about 12 1 had an enemy,a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings.Week by week her list grew:I was skinny,I wasn't a good student,I was boyish,I talked too loud, and so on.I put up with her as long as I could. At last, with great anger,I ran to my father in tears. He listened to my outburst quietly. Then he asked,"Are the things she says true or not?" True?I wanted to know how to strike back. What did truth have to do with it? "Mary, didn't you ever wonder what you are really like?Well, you now have that girl's opinion.Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true.Pay no attention to the other things she said." I did as he directed and discovered to my surprise that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change(like being skinny),but a good number I could and suddenly wanted to change. For the first time in my life I got a fairly clear picture of myself. I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. "That's just for you,"he said."You know better than anybody else the truth about yourself, once you hear it.But you've got to learn to listen, not to close your ears in anger or hurt. When something said about you is true you'll know it.You'll find that it will echo inside you." Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. What did the girl's enemy like to do?

、We first think of the traditional or nuclear family. This is a two-generation family, the father and the mother and their own children. Most couples wanted to have four children, two boys, two girls. Some nuclear families, however, may add one or more grandparents to come to live with them, that is three generations. This kind of family with grandparents, parents, and grandchildren is called an extended family. This family type was not very common during the later half of the twentieth century, but it's becoming more common now as an elderly grandparent moves in to live with a son or daughter. This is more possible now that American homes have become larger. What is interesting, however,is that after the grandchildren move out of the home and start their own families, this extended family shrinks back to a nuclear family, with just two generations again living together,a grandparent and parents, with the grandchildren coming only for occasional visits. Now,the fatherless or motherless family is one kind of what we call a single-parent family. In the fatherless family it's just the mother and her children. As I said, this can be the result of the husband's death,of an unmarried mother,of a separation or divorce. There are also a growing number of motherless families--where the father raises the children, for any of the same reasons.A motherless family may also be fatherless, but still a family with one adult. This is becoming more common in the big cities where a grandmother will raise her daughter's children while the daughter goes elsewhere to work. One other new kind of family is becoming increasingly more common.A single parent with one or more children will marry again.Perhaps the other parent is also a single parent.Together they will start what is called a blended family, which blends together or combines the children from two other families. Who usually looks after the children in a both motherless and fatherless family in America?

、Train companies in Tokyo are taking action to reduce the number of people jumping in front of trains. They are fitting blue lights on station platforms to try and create a more calming atmosphere. The East Japan Railway Company has invested almost$170,000 to install the lights in all of the 29 stations on the capital's busy Yamanote Line. There has been an alarming rise in the number of people committing suicide at train stations.A total of 68 people threw themselves under trains in the year up to March. This compares with 42 suicides in the same period a year earlier. In 2008,Japan had nearly 2,000 suicides by jumping in front of a train;around six percent of all suicides nationwide.Suicides have risen sharply in the past decade due to poor economic conditions. No one knows if the blue lights will work. There is no evidence to show that blue light reduces suicidal feelings.Keihan Railway spokesman Osamu Okawa stated:"We thought we had to do something to save lives. We know there is no scientific proof that blue lights deter suicides, but if blue has a soothing effect on the mind,we want to try it to save lives."The Associated Press news agency reports on a Japanese therapist called Mizuki Takahashi. She explained her reasons why the blue lights might be a good idea:"We associate the color with the sky and the sea.It has a calming effect on agitated people,or people obsessed with one particular thing, which in this case is committing suicide,"she said.Other companies are watching this experiment with interest. Why blue lights are installed in many train stations?

、Stress makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again.Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems. There are numerous physical effects of stress.Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure.Stress can affect the respiratory system. It can lead to asthma. It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide.Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches and problems digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress. Emotions are also easily affected by stress.People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example,a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice.Stress can make people angry, moody,or nervous. It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body. So,reduce stress:stop the world and rest for a while. Stress can affect the respiratory system by__.

、In 2011, a dog owner named Robert uploaded a video titled“Guilty!” to YouTube. He had come home finding his two dogs near an empty bag of cat treats. The first dog behaved calmly. But the second dog, Denver, sat shaking in a corner, her eyes looking down, which made Robert believe it was she who had done it. Seeing her “apparent admission of guilt,” he yelled at her, “You did this!” Denver beat her tail nervously. “You know the routine. In the kennel(狗窝)!” Following the command, the dog shut herself in.The video quickly gathered a flood of comments. Since then, “dog shaming” has become popularOn the internet, as owners around the world posted beside notes shots of their trembling pets in which the dogs seemed to admit bad behavior. For instance, “I ate an extra large pizza,” admits a chocolate Lab. Human enthusiasm for guilty dogs seemed growing. But according to a researcher at Barnard College, what we consider to be a dog’s guilty look is no sign of guilt at all. In a 2009 study, the researcher had owners forbid their dogs from eating an attractive treat, and then asked the owners to leave the room. While each owner was gone, the researcher either removed the treat or fed it to the dog. When the owners returned, they were told-regardless of the truth-that their dogs either had or had not eaten it. If owners thought their dogs had done something wrong, blames followed, and guilty looks quickly emerged. Yet dogs who hadn’t eaten the treat were more likely to appear guilty than dogs who had-so long as their owners scolded them. Far from signaling regret, one group of researchers wrote in a 2012 paper, the guilty look of dogs is very likely a means to show obedience(顺从)to their owners. What did Robert want to show with his video on YouTube?
