、Social customs and ways of behaving change.Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable.Just a few years ago,it was considered impolite behaviour for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room. Customs are also different from country to country.Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country?Or doesn't it matter? What about table manner?Should you use both hands when you are eating? The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example,in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans.Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is,if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable--especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way.It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable. According to the text, the best host

、Years ago,a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work,we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction,we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach. The truth is simple;so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet,we pursue the myth that this thing,or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek. Arthur Lindman,in his very effective book,"The Harried Leisure Class,"described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But,ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme,he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago,and his prediction seems more accurate every year. Lindman of course,is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better,he wrote,to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more,I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on? The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up,the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself. We can make our life happier if we__.

、Of all Barry H.Landau's anecdotes about his friendships with presidential dogs, perhaps the best is the one about the time the Clinton White House called to postpone his play-date with Buddy. Yes,Landau is both human and an adult,a 60-year-old author, presidential historian, former White House protocol officer and memorabilia collector. But so enamored is he of dogs, and so well connected to a succession of presidents, that he had an appointment for a South Lawn romp one day with Buddy,Bill Clinton's Labrador retriever(拉布拉多犬). Logistics got in the way, though, and hence Clinton secretary Betty Currie's apologetic voice mail left at the Smithsonian Institution, where Landau was doing research:"I'm sorry, but we'll have to reschedule Mr.Landau's play-date with Buddy." Not surprisingly, this is a happy week for Landau, with the new Obama family dog,Bo,joining a White House tradition that dates to George Washington. It's one that Landau feels is invaluable to a presidency. "Having a dog just humanizes a president,"he says."It completes the picture. It's something people can relate to." And Landau has related to the best of them. He's known about 25 White House dogs since the Eisenhower administration.Among the presidential-pooch memorabilia in his Manhattan apartment are matching orange inaugural dog coats worn by LBJ's twin beagles(小猎犬),Him and Her,and a photo of Landau kissing Clipper,JFK's German shepherd. Who's"Buddy"?

、There are many stereotypes about the character of people in various parts of the United States. In the Northeast and Midwest, people are said to be closed and private. In the South and West, however, they are often thought of as being more open and hospitable.Ask someone from St.Louis where the nearest sandwich shop is,and he or she will politely give you directions.A New Yorker might eye you at first and after deciding it is safe to talk to you, might give you a rather unexpected explanation.A person from Georgia might be very kind about directing you and even suggest some different places to eat.A Texan just might take you to the place and treat you to lunch. American stereotypes are abundant.New Englanders are often thought of as being friendly and helpful.Southerners are known for their hospitality and warmth.People from the western part of the United States are often considered very outgoing. These differences in character can be traced to different factors such as climate, living conditions, and historical development. When travelling from place to place,Americans themselves are often surprised at the differing degrees of friendliness in the United States. The main idea of the passage is__.

、“If there is one thing I’m sure about,it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future,I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact,I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news,et C. I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体).They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happene D.What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air.And as for the Internet,it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen. What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?

、Vegans try to live, as much as possible, in a way that avoids exploiting and being cruel to animals.“his means following a plant-based diet. Vegans do not eat animals or animal-based products like meat, fish, seafood, eggs, honey and dairy products such as cheese. For many vegans, living a committed vegan lifestyle means not wearing clothes made from animal skins and avoiding any products which have been tested on animals.Vegans argue that suffering is caused in the production of these foods. For example, they say that, on some dairy farms, male calves(小牛)are killed because they are too expensive to keep, and cows are killed when they get older and produce less milk. As for honey, vegans say that bees make honey for bee, not for humans, and that bees’health can suffer when humans take the honey from them. Vegans be lieve that the products they use and consume should be free from not just cruelty but any exploitation of animals. The main reason for going vegan is probably that they believe animals and all other sentient(有感知能力的)beings should have the right to life and freedom. However, there are other reasons. Vegans argue that the production of meat and other animal products is very bad for the environment. They point out that a huge quantity of water is needed to grow grain to feed animals in the meat industry. The enormous amount of grain which the meat industry needs often leads to forests being cut down and habitats(栖息地)being lost. In contrast, much lower quantities of grain and water are needed to sustain a vegan diet. In addition, many vegans say that all the nutritious elements our bodies need are contained in a carefully planned vegan diet and that this type of diet helps prevent some diseases. What is a vegan in this passage?
