、Years ago,a cigarette commercial asked if you were smoking more, but enjoying it less. That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn't work,we get the problem. In our extremely hurried search for satisfaction,we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach. The truth is simple;so simple it is hard to believe.Satisfaction lies with less, not with more.Yet,we pursue the myth that this thing,or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek. Arthur Lindman,in his very effective book,"The Harried Leisure Class,"described the uselessness of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time.He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But,ironically, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them.Carried to an extreme,he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago,and his prediction seems more accurate every year. Lindman of course,is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago.It is better,he wrote,to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more,I challenge you to experiment with me.How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on? The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up,the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you.You must try it for yourself. The best title for the passage is__.

、If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year.A noted scientist,Ellsworth Huntington(1876-1947),concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year.It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer. Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer,it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking! Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have__.

、At the first sight the planet Mars does not appear very welcome to any kind of life.It has very little oxygen and water, the temperature at night is below-50~Cand winds of 100 miles per hour cause severe dust storms. However, the surface of the planet seems to show that water flowed across it some time in the past, and it is believed that there is enough ice at the poles to cover the planet with water if it melts.Although there is no life on the Mars now, some scientists think that there may have been some form of life long time ago.At that time, the planet had active volcanoes;the atmosphere was thicker and warmer;and there was water. In fact,in some ways the Mars may have been similar to the Earth, where life exists. Some people believe that the Mars could support life in the future if the right conditions were produced. The first step would be to warm the planet using certain gases which trap the Sun's heat in the planet's atmosphere. With warmth, water and carbon dioxide(二氧化碳),simple plants could begin to grow. These plants could slowly make the Mars more suitable for living. It is estimated that the whole process might take between 100,000 and 200,000 years. In the meantime, people could begin to live on the planet in special closed environments. They would provide a lot of useful information about conditions on the Mars and the problems connected with living there. The author's attitude towards the possibility of life on the Mars in the future is__.

、Train companies in Tokyo are taking action to reduce the number of people jumping in front of trains. They are fitting blue lights on station platforms to try and create a more calming atmosphere. The East Japan Railway Company has invested almost$170,000 to install the lights in all of the 29 stations on the capital's busy Yamanote Line. There has been an alarming rise in the number of people committing suicide at train stations.A total of 68 people threw themselves under trains in the year up to March. This compares with 42 suicides in the same period a year earlier. In 2008,Japan had nearly 2,000 suicides by jumping in front of a train;around six percent of all suicides nationwide.Suicides have risen sharply in the past decade due to poor economic conditions. No one knows if the blue lights will work. There is no evidence to show that blue light reduces suicidal feelings.Keihan Railway spokesman Osamu Okawa stated:"We thought we had to do something to save lives. We know there is no scientific proof that blue lights deter suicides, but if blue has a soothing effect on the mind,we want to try it to save lives."The Associated Press news agency reports on a Japanese therapist called Mizuki Takahashi. She explained her reasons why the blue lights might be a good idea:"We associate the color with the sky and the sea.It has a calming effect on agitated people,or people obsessed with one particular thing, which in this case is committing suicide,"she said.Other companies are watching this experiment with interest. The use of blue lights to reduce suicides__.

、If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research result of professor Faulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result,we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and to reason at a relatively early age,and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations. Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the human character. Contraction of front and side parts--as cells die off--was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds. Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contraction—using the head. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Faulkner, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors.White--collar workers doing routine work are, however,as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant. Faulkner's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking.Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need."The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,"he says."Think hard and engage in conversation.Don't rely on pocket calculators." Professor Faulkner wanted to find out__.

、It was a case of emergency. The four-year-old girl awoke and smelled smoke. She couldn't wake her mother,so she dialed"zero",An operator immediately called the fire department.Help was sent, and a tragedy avoided. Days before this emergency, the mother had taught her child how to telephone for help.Children as young as two and one-half years old can be taught to use the phone in emergency situations. Here are some points. Memorizing certain facts is important.Teach your children their names, and the section of town where you live.Try to keep what they learn within their abilities.Simple information, learned well,is better than difficult information only partly learned. Be sure your children know how to use the telephone. They should be taught to dial"zero"for the operator,at the very least. And they should be taught to dial"911"if it is used in your town. Practice over a period of several days.Over-learning is necessary so the child can act automatically in case of emergency. If you would like a booklet giving instructions on calling for help, write Telephone For Help,Box 99,Bowling Green Station,New York,NY 10004. From this passage, why is it a good idea for children to learn how to use the telephone?

、Stress makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again.Too much stress results in physical, emotional, and mental health problems. There are numerous physical effects of stress.Stress can affect the heart. It can increase the pulse rate, make the heart miss beats, and can cause high blood pressure.Stress can affect the respiratory system. It can lead to asthma. It can cause a person to breathe too fast, resulting in a loss of important carbon dioxide.Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches and problems digesting food. These are only a few examples of the wide range of illnesses and symptoms resulting from stress. Emotions are also easily affected by stress.People suffering from stress often feel anxious. They may have panic attacks. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact to little problems. For example,a normally gentle parent under a lot of stress at work may yell at a child for dropping a glass of juice.Stress can make people angry, moody,or nervous. Long-term stress can lead to a variety of serious mental illnesses.Depression,an extreme feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress.Alcoholism and other addictions often develop as a result of overuse of alcohol or drugs to try to relieve stress.Eating disorders, such as anorexia, are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is put at risk. It is obvious that stress is a serious problem. It attacks the body. So,reduce stress:stop the world and rest for a while. Stress can affect the respiratory system by__.

、Music is part of the structure of our society; it sits at the heart of human experience and enriches(丰富)so many lives. Why, then, is it not central to our education system? This is a question I recently put forward to an all-party group on music education.I am 20 years old and began playing the piano at the Barracudas Band in Barrow-in-Furness,aged seven. The funding for the centre has now been cut. I took part in the primary tuition project, aged 11. The funding for that has also been cut now. It is a common problem across the country.Music is not an add-on, a “soft” subject or a luxury—it is absolutely essential to our existence.Every child deserves the opportunity to experience its benefits. Until music is held in the same regard as the “core” subjects of our curriculum, our society will be worse off. We need joy, empathy (共情) and hope on this planet more than ever, and taking away children’s opportunity to develop musical skills is to set ourselves up for a fall. Despite the many brilliant programs and projects to encourage young musicians (“Every Child a Musician,” “Awards for Young Musicians,” to name but a few), we are reaching a crisis point. We are in danger of destroying creativity, innovation(创新)and expression. Learning an instrument can help develop so many fundamental life skills. It promotes discipline, empathy, determination and cooperation as well as providing a sense of community and worth.Music has changed my life. It is a huge part of who I am. I have learned so much about the worldThrough music and the inspiring figures I have met through it I feel I have a duty to help ensure that others can benefit from its magic. Let us make it available to every single child. Why did the author raise the question on music education?

、There are many interesting news items in BP’s(英国石油公司)annual Energy Outlook just published. But perhaps the most astonishing suggestion in the report is the idea that cutting back on plastic use could make matters worse. This might be what you would expect BP to say. After all, as one of the world’s biggest oil companies, it makes a lot of money from selling products in plastic. But let’s look at the thinking behind BP’s argument. If the current opposing idea about the use of plastic continues, there could be a worldwide ban on single-use plastics by 2040. But the document argues that switching plastic for other materials will have a bigger cost in terms of energy and carbon emissions(排放). That sounds like the law of unintended(非故意的)consequences in action. When plastic bags are measured against paper or cotton substitutes, a BBC analysis found there wasn’t a great deal of difference in their environmental impact. Paper bags require fewer reuses to make them more environmentally friendly than single-use plastic bags, which means customers have to replace paper bags more frequently.Environmentalists, though, are not entirely convinced. They think that BP is stressing the problem of banning plastic for its own interest. “While it’s true that it takes less energy to produce and transport plastic than glass, a glass bottle can be reused dozens of times and is recyclable. Plus, materials like glass when they escape collection don’t go on polluting our oceans and rivers for hundreds of years," said Louise Edge, from Greenpeace UK.Steps to encourage recycling are being taken. The UK, for example, will introduce a new tax on the manufacture and import of plastic packaging in 2022. There are also lots of developments taking place with alternative materials. These may be the final defense against the unintended consequences of plastic bans.According to environmentalists ,what causes BP to oppose banning plastics?
